The dMAT (Digital Master Test) is a new standardised academic aptitude test that Germany introduced in June 2026 as part of the APS India verification process. If you're an Indian student applying for a Master's degree in Germany in Engineering, Commerce, Accounting, Finance, Economics, Business or Management, this test may now be a required part of your APS documentation β and it's a completely new, unfamiliar step for almost every applicant and consultant alike.
Not every Germany Master's applicant needs to take the dMAT. It currently applies only to specific undergraduate fields, only through the APS India process, and only for Summer Semester 2027 intake onward. If you submitted your APS application before 29 June 2026, you are exempt entirely. Read the eligibility section below carefully, or book a free call with our Germany desk to confirm your specific situation before you spend time or money registering.
The Digital Master Test is a computer-based, language-independent academic aptitude test β not a subject-knowledge exam. It measures how well you reason, spot patterns and solve problems under time pressure, rather than testing how much engineering or accounting theory you remember from your degree. Think of it as sitting somewhere between an IQ-style aptitude test and a GMAT-style reasoning section.
It was developed by the Universities of Ulm and Kassel, with subject modules built in cooperation with German universities, and the underlying groundwork was supported by the DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service). It is administered by g.a.s.t. (Gesellschaft fΓΌr Akademische Studienvorbereitung und Testentwicklung) β the same organisation behind TestDaF and TestAS β and centrally evaluated at the TestDaF Institute in Bochum, Germany.
Crucially, the dMAT does not replace your APS certificate. APS India continues to verify your academic transcripts and degree documents exactly as before. The dMAT simply sits alongside that process as one more required certificate for a specific group of applicants, giving German universities a standardised, comparable aptitude signal across India's wide range of grading systems and institutions β something a transcript alone can't easily provide.
Announced by APS India on 29 June 2026, reshaping how Germany-bound Master's applicants sequence their paperwork.
Tests reasoning, logic and pattern recognition β there's no subject syllabus to memorise or cram.
The same body behind TestDaF and TestAS, supported by the DAAD and developed with German universities.
It's an additional certificate β APS India still verifies your academic documents separately.
The requirement is narrower than most students assume. Here's exactly who it applies to, and who's exempt.
Interdisciplinary degrees such as Engineering Management, Business Analytics, Data Science or FinTech may need to be individually checked against APS India's official affected-fields list, since classification depends on your degree's formal field designation.
Earlier intakes (Winter 2026 and before) are not covered by the current requirement, regardless of your undergraduate field.
If you're unsure which category you fall into, our Germany desk can check your specific case for free before you register or pay any fee.
There's no traditional, chapter-wise syllabus to cram β it's an aptitude test built around two modules.
~90 minutes Β· Identical for every applicant
Measures general cognitive and analytical ability through three timed subtests. Every applicant gets the same questions, regardless of degree field β there's no field-specific version of the Core Module.
~90 minutes Β· Used for the APS India pathway
For the APS India process specifically, you sit the General Academic Module alongside the Core Module β not a subject-specific version. It presents a short academic scenario or passage, then asks you to apply reasoning to answer related questions.
Note: some German programmes at RWTH Aachen or GΓΆttingen use dedicated Subject Modules (e.g. Computer Science, Data Science) for direct university admission β but for the APS India route, the General Academic Module is the standard requirement, not these subject-specific versions.

Not Allowed
The dMAT has no negative marking, so it always pays to attempt every question β even a guess has better odds than leaving it blank. Because note-taking isn't allowed during the Core Module, candidates who practise solving Figure Sequences and Latin Squares mentally, without scratch paper, tend to adapt to real exam conditions far faster than those who don't.

Important: the dMAT does not replace the GRE. Some German universities may still require GRE scores alongside the dMAT depending on their individual admission criteria β always check your target university's specific requirements too.
Since it's an aptitude test rather than a knowledge exam, preparation looks different from typical entrance-exam studying.
Get familiar with Figure Sequences, Mathematical Equations and Latin Squares before attempting timed practice.
Speed and pattern recognition matter more than depth β train with a strict timer from day one, 4-8 weeks out.
Note-taking isn't allowed in the real exam, so practise solving Core Module questions mentally from the start.
The official d-mat.de portal offers free sample questions β treat these as your primary, most reliable reference.
We confirm whether your specific degree field and intake actually require the dMAT before you spend a rupee.
Guidance through the g.a.s.t. portal, test-centre selection and fee payment, so nothing is filed incorrectly.
Structured practice on Figure Sequences, Mathematical Equations and Latin Squares under real exam conditions.
We sequence your dMAT, APS and university applications together so nothing gets delayed or filed out of order.
No. It only applies to applicants with an undergraduate degree in Engineering, Commerce/Accounting/Finance/Economics, or Business/Management, going through the APS India process for Summer Semester 2027 intake or later.
If you submitted your APS application before 29 June 2026, you are exempt from the dMAT requirement entirely, regardless of your degree field.
No to both. The dMAT is an additional requirement alongside your APS certificate, and it does not replace the GRE β some German universities may still ask for GRE scores separately, depending on their own admission criteria.
Register on d-mat.de, create an account, choose your preferred test centre from the available Indian cities (or Kathmandu), and pay the β¬150 fee directly to g.a.s.t. to confirm your slot.
Yes, subsequent test cycles are expected to be held periodically after the first sitting on 26 September 2026. Check d-mat.de for the next available date if you miss the first cycle or want to reattempt.
No, currently the dMAT is only available at licensed physical test centres in India (and Kathmandu, Nepal). There is no remote or at-home testing option at present.
No, there is no negative marking, so it's always worth attempting every single question rather than leaving any blank.
Your dMAT result is centrally evaluated at the TestDaF Institute and reflected on your APS certificate, which you then submit as part of your university application in Germany.
